The original township was laid out in 1805, with the Little Neshannock Creek becoming the eastern boundary in 1849 with other bordering townships to the north – Jefferson Twp, South – Wilmington Twp., and the west, Shenango Twp and what was once known as Hickory Twp, but currently the City of Hermitage. The geographical center of the township is the village of Greenfield.

The derivation of Lackawannock is a combination of “Lac” the French word for lake, and “Wannock”, the name of an Indian chief who lived in a wigwam located on a nearby lake. Mostly, the Indians living in the area were quite friendly and helpful. Those of the Mohawk tribe were the most friendly and probably held in honor among the settlers. As more and more settlers began to arrive, the Indians began to move away. There was no transportation at the time and any type of communication was word of mouth.

Lackawannock Township gradually became a first-rate farming area and is to this day. Woodland and farmland homesteads dot the countryside. The township is also home to many of our Amish friends.
